Why not create a visitor centre at the Dairy?
IMAGINE how ridiculous the island would look if it had ended dairy operations and effectively the existence of its iconic cow from its place of origin, whilst processing of its produce continued in other parts of the world?
I don’t know how far the redesign has gone and whether ideas have already been considered and incorporated/discounted, but why not create a proper, purpose-built visitor centre allowing locals and tourists alike to see how the dairy produces its range of products, as well as providing a history of our beloved friend and how it has been adopted worldwide? Included in the centre could be a dining facility and shop, allowing the dairy to showcase and sell its products. For example, an American-style ‘diner’ selling Guernsey milkshakes and buttermilk chicken, with an ‘in-house’ ice cream parlour. The trip would of course be completed by exiting through the ubiquitous gift shop with a range of Guernsey Dairy homeware and foodstuffs, etc. I’m sure the latter would brilliantly supplement the arts and crafts sector ‘Revive and Thrive’ promises to encourage. In fact, why not select a site which could also include the ‘sheds’ for artists, craftsmen and start-ups that have been spoken about for years?
