The island needs to look at how it can feed itself

WE, as an island, have to be really grateful that we have a government who took the step to shut down our borders to deal with the impact of Covid-19 as it swept across the world.

The death rate worldwide is now running into thousands, and a number of them are dealing with second waves, such as some cities in Australia where they are operating curfews so that you cannot go out between 8pm and 5am, and the cost of food in America is rising as so many food processing plants have shut down as the staff infections are rising at an alarming rate.

We are now coming up to our first full island-wide election, and it may be worth some of the candidates who are standing to deal less with the platitudes we have had in the past, and look more in depth about how the island can feed itself rather than importing so much food, and the reliance it has on the tourist industry, which may take years to recover.

This island has a great history of taking risks and changing the way it does business; if one industry dies we produce something else. So there is nothing stopping us from doing it again with the right leadership.
