Stop acting like a kid in a sweet shop

NOW, calm down Deputy Inder, newly-elected president of Economic Development. You do not ‘throw’ taxpayers’ money at anything until you have conducted a proper evaluation as to how that money will be spent. As it is, Guernsey Finance, the promotional agency set up by the States to promote the finance industry, already receives £1.5m. of taxpayers’ money and, as I recall, a further £1m. plus comes directly from the finance industry themselves as a result of a States resolution.

Our finance industry is perfectly capable of promoting themselves, many sectors have offices all over the world, without GF duplicating the same.

And this year, the finance industry has managed to survive the worst effects of Covid 19 by working innovatively. Guernsey Finance likes to ‘jolly’ all over the world so what have they been doing this year? Not a lot I would imagine. And as for Visit Guernsey, and our tourist industry, well they have struggled this year, and are still struggling.

Thank goodness for the staycation initiative (and the Isle of Man link) to encourage local people to support our restaurants, hotels, Seafront Sundays and many other events.

Tourism needs more help to survive. So calm down, Deputy Inder, take stock of the real situation and stop acting like a kid in a sweetie shop.

You have been privileged to have been given a responsible position. Now act accordingly.
