It’s wrong to take back the gift of a TV licence

I FEEL I must write to express my dismay at the way the ‘oldies’ are being treated with regard to the BBC TV licence. It is morally and ethically wrong to take back a gift (which this was).

I know the Crown Dependencies have a different relationship with the BBC than the UK and we could make our own decision.

The fact that those receiving benefits will continue to get a licence free is actually discrimination. It discriminates between the ‘haves’ and the ‘have nots’ and a lot of us in the ‘have nots’ have struggled to keep paying their way.

So, on 1 January 2021, what am I to do? If I do not pay I will be a criminal. If I ended up in prison it would be a greater cost than the licence.

If I had the money I would take legal advice but then, of course, if I had the money I would be able to afford to pay.

Any pension increase is insufficient to cover the cost of this licence. What can I do?
