Should we close the sports hall for vaccinations?

SURELY closing the sports hall at Beau Sejour for mass vaccinations to take place cannot be the brightest of ideas this newly formed government hierarchy have come up with. Especially when it is for five odd months.

This place was built for people to participate in sport and when we are told over and over again to take part in activities to keep fit it makes very little sense to shut this area down from the main purpose it is there for. Also with the amount of money we have borrowed needing to be paid back shutting an area that will bring in revenue over those months does not seem to make a lot of sense at all. Surely the Dave Ferguson Hall would be big enough for this use and if not then extend the needed space into the concourse area.

Anyhow, away from the Corona virus and all its hype it is noticeable how without any fear of bumping into a police officer on our streets anymore there are more and more people riding cycles through Town. On occasions there are even vehicles (cars) not permitted driving through the area. Admitted week days cyclist ride in a slower controlled manner but on some Sundays there are lads travelling at speed around the Arcade and someone will get badly hurt one of these days. The thing is with no chance of a police officer popping up anywhere these people know they can do these things and it can only get worse.

Are we really that short of policemen and women that we cannot have them patrolling the streets anymore or is it they have so much work that it can only be done in a car nowadays? One can only imagine/suspect it is another civil servant idea after all is them who run the island (most of the time) and the government who just rubber stamp what they put forward.

Editor’s footnote: a spokesperson from Guernsey Police replies:

‘We’re happy to have the opportunity to reassure your readers that on all shift rotations we have officers patrolling the streets, including the Town area. We also have a dedicated Neighbourhood Policing Team who are visible and very active in the areas they serve. Clearly we cannot cover every location throughout the island at all times, but officers walking the beat and engaging with the community will continue to be a priority for us.’
