Deputies in bind over promises

WELL, well, well. So the ‘chickens have come home to roost’ – or perhaps it should be ‘don’t

expect the turkeys to vote for Christmas’.

In my letter published on 24 September (Most candidates are not worthy to be your deputies), I warned voters about choosing deputies who had already made up their minds about the secondary schools debate before receiving the results of the review, which was under way at that very time.

The five elected deputies chosen by their peers in the committee elections all preferred and ‘promised’ in their manifestos to support the three 11-16 schools/separate sixth-form college model.

And what has the review shown? That this model is by far the most expensive – not by a small amount – by a whopping 50-75% more at £30-45m., that’s roughly £1,000-£1,500 for each of us taxpayers.

Will they go back on their ballot-box ‘promise’? How can they afford to do that and expect anybody to trust them again.

At least the clever wise men didn’t show up until after the baby boy-child was born.

Merry Christmas to all politicians who make promises they shouldn’t keep. And Happy New Year to all taxpayers who can’t afford that extra grand.

And when you pull the wish-bone on Friday, be careful what you wish for.

Ho! Ho! Ho!
