Safe haven allowed me to enjoy visiting family at Christmas

I HAVE just returned to Jersey after an extended stay in Guernsey where I was visiting family for Christmas and New Year. I would like the opportunity, through your newspaper, to congratulate the States of Guernsey, Public Health and everyone in the island on their proactive approach to the current pandemic.

After an anxious few months of missed trips and cancelled flights, I was fortunate enough to secure a seat on the last business flight between Jersey and Guernsey and arrived in Guernsey on 19 November (nearly five weeks earlier than originally planned). As an octogenarian, the process of completing and then accessing an online travel tracker when required was somewhat challenging but a very helpful young gentleman at the airport assisted me and all the formalities and a Covid test were completed with no problem. A taxi was waiting at the airport and I was whisked off to Les Rocquettes, where I had a room booked for my two weeks’ self-isolation. Check-in at the hotel was quick and efficient, instructions were very clear; I was to go straight to my room and not leave it.

Service at the hotel was faultless and the staff were extremely helpful and pleasant. During my isolation period, a member of the Covid team contacted me to ensure that all was well and a physical visit from a member of the team followed. As well as checking to ensure that I was adhering to the isolation requirements, they were also checking on my wellbeing and ensuring I had all I needed. I was contacted again and offered a 13-day test, which I accepted. This was completed on time and efficiently. I was delighted to receive a negative test and confirmation that I was free to leave isolation within a few hours.

I have been very reassured by the competent and efficient way my entry into the island and subsequent self-isolation has been handled. It has been a real pleasure to enjoy five weeks of freedom to travel within the Bailiwick as I wish without the need for masks and social distancing.

Guernsey is extremely fortunate to be in the enviable position they are in and I would like to thank Dr Nicola Brink, the States of Guernsey and the people of Guernsey for the wonderful job you have all done to keep the island the safe haven that it is and thus enabling me to enjoy Christmas among family.
