Virus doesn’t recognise immigration status, but insular attitudes do
A LOCAL shot, for local people. I was disappointed to read Deputy Brouard’s comments (‘Islanders urged to wait their turn’, 11 Jan) that Guernsey will not vaccinate non-residents who have returned to care for sick relatives. My son has done just that during my chemotherapy. Now he, and others, face a choice of remaining unvaccinated to support loved ones, or leaving the island. I understand early anxiety about vaccine availability, but given wastage in the initial rollout was 0.7% vs. the anticipated 20%, then supply should not ultimately be an issue. The virus doesn’t recognise immigration status, but insular attitudes do. Sadly, I’m reminded of The League of Gentlemen characters: a local shot, for local people.
