Ruling on churches and funeral numbers needs revisiting
SADLY our island has been hit by an unexpected amount of coronavirus cases and we have been put back in lockdown. We all know it was a shock to the system but our government has mentioned how we/they have been through this before and we/they have learnt from the experience. I feel the government may be overlooking one important issue in the fact that people want to attend funerals to pay their last respects to family and friends and once again keeping the number of people allowed to attend down to 10 is more a dictatorship than a safety measure. Surely a lesson was not learnt in this direction and people’s pleas have not been taken into account on this fact. Once again I make the point that if people can self distance at shops and supermarkets why not at churches and other venues? People are ushered on the outside of supermarkets and I see no reason why they cannot be ushered outside churches or other venues providing a funeral service. Churches should be open to the public at all times anyway as long as the people attending distance themselves. If the government is so interested (as they keep telling us) about mental health and wellbeing, surely this is a major factor for anyone with religious beliefs and their health. I am sure people distancing outside a church will be more disciplined once inside, seated at safe intervals, than a lot of people who show care and wellbeing for others around them in a supermarket queue outside the building but once inside run amok, knocking other shoppers out of the way to grab something before anyone else get it.
I am sorry if I am repeating what I wrote last year but along with many other family members because of only 10 people being able to be present at the funeral I was not able to attend the farewell service of a very loved family member and that not only hurt me deeply but had an effect on my mental health.
As much as I appreciate all the good work you are doing, and I respect that some hard decisions have to be made, I would suggest you take a look at this ruling on churches and funeral attendances because in my opinion you have got this very wrong.
