King Canute analogy shows writer's lack of understanding

MR Tony Webber, in his recent letter, compares the Guernsey authorities to King Canute in order to try and decry their recent Covid lockdown policy.

I do not to wish to engage here with any of Mr Webber’s arguments except to say I have total confidence in the policies of Dr Brink, members of the CCA and their hardworking teams.

I would, however, like to comment on one aspect of his letter.

The story of King Canute in which he is often portrayed as the vain and arrogant king who tried and failed to hold back the tide is often misunderstood. In fact, Canute is said to have staged the scene on the sea shore to stem the tide of effusive flattering of his courtiers who kept telling him he was so powerful he could do anything he wanted.

Once the tide has reached his ankles, his wisdom really shines through as he declares that all men should know that the power of kings and rulers is worthless compared with the power of God. Thereafter he hangs up his golden crown. Comparisons with him can be seen as a compliment. Canute wins every time!
