The island is finished as a holiday destination

WHY spend thousands of pounds trying to get people to come to Guernsey for a break when basically the island is finished as a holiday destination when it comes to staying for more than a couple of hours off a cruise ship? Why not admit it? – we have nothing on offer like back in the old days, when we had attractions such as the Butterfly Farm, the Tomato Factory, the Strawberry Farm and floor shows that gave the locals as well as visitors a night out to enjoy. A time when self catering accommodation (rents) along with food, alcohol, petrol and in general everything was cheaper than where they lived. Also, let’s just imagine what it would be like if we did get those numbers back visiting our shores for a two-week visit and hiring cars to try and get around. We used to moan back then that the place was over populated with hire vehicles who did not know how to use our roads and look forward to them going back at times. Now we actually have even more and much larger vehicles with people not respecting others driving around in Guernsey on a permanent basis. In a nutshell our government and the business people have got what they wanted and now we have nothing left to offer in the attraction stakes. Our lovely Market Square that was once a hive of activity and a market place/building that visitors and locals alike loved to walk around is like any other place in Europe. What they aimed for in respect of alfresco dining, cyclist on footpaths, road jams everywhere, over population and people like pensioners who worked hard all their lives living on the poverty line having to ask for a hand outs while millionaires having their tax payment capped off – they have got. As I have said before, Guernsey and its people have lost their identity and all because of greed and money. So let’s throw millions at changing the face of the island in an effort to attract visitors who still will not come our way because it is just too expensive to get here and when they do, they will find it looks like any other place they could have gone to for less with almost guaranteed wall-to-wall sunshine.
