Deputies should feel guilty about the mess we are in now

READING again the debates of the latest education proposals of what type of school system is correct for the island is very frustrating.

All we see after all these years of different proposals is still bickering from all quarters. We see the teachers are concerned with the latest proposals, as they have been in the last years of other proposals, and of course the rumours. Deputy Roffey had his say on his full page comment column and still ended with his view of not knowing which way to vote in the future.

Then we see that newly-elected Deputy Andy Cameron has come out against the majority of the committee’s ideas. But I must say, reading between the lines, I agree with him that it would be ridiculous to move the already established and successful Sixth Form Centre to Les Ozouets, which would cost some £30m. we badly need to invest in all schools.

Whatever the outcome, this needs to be sorted after all these years of debate.

I end by saying that I am not an expert on what is best for our system but to clearly say that our existing selection system of my lifetime was never ‘broke’ and did not need to be changed.

Now look what is happening, we should have left the old system as it was, but change the way the selection system was operated.

Too late now and I hope those deputies, past and present, feel guilty about the mess we are in now, let alone how our students feel at present. Disgraceful.
