Action needed on noisy vehicles

ALTHOUGH things have generally improved in and around St Peter Port in the past 12 months, I remain baffled by some of the things that go on in the parish I live in.

Published

For example, the current trend for noisy vehicles (both cars and motorcycles) being driven at antisocial times of the day. Why do some vehicle owners deem it their God-given right to modify the exhausts and/or engines of their vehicles so they are no longer compliant with Guernsey traffic noise regulations? Is it to seem more macho and impress? Or to intimidate and bully pedestrians, cyclists and owners of less noisy vehicles? It almost seems like a prestige thing to drive a noisy vehicle in Guernsey and the drivers of these vehicles seem largely oblivious to Guernsey’s traffic laws and seem to lack all but the most rudimentary driving/riding skills. It is an embarrassment and a shame to the island that tourists visiting Guernsey here this summer have had to witness these vehicles being driven on our roads. They must think the normal rules of the road do not apply over here. I have a decibel-meter and have recorded vehicle noise in Guernsey at 110 decibels, when the noise limit in Guernsey traffic regulations is a mere 90. There used to be a Vehicle Rectification Scheme whose duty it was to take vehicles which are unfit for use off our roads. I wonder what has become of this essential service, although there was talk of an MOT a few years ago, and paid parking, which would have taken some of this unseemly junk-on-wheels off our roads. So come on Guernsey politicians, let’s sort out this problem which is a shame and an embarrassment to the island.
