Loss of island’s agricultural land affects us all

WITH my usual glance at the applications to Development and Planning last week I noticed nine applications to convert agricultural land to domestic garden. The total area was almost 14,000 square metres. If this is a typical week then in the course of a year an area equivalent to 100 football fields would be lost to agriculture. This is not just a problem for our farmers but affects us all.

Agricultural fields are usually open and visible, creating pleasant green spaces that we can all view and enjoy. Understandably, those lucky enough to be able to afford extending their garden will probably want their privacy and erect fences or hedges so these open vistas are forever lost.

This loss of agricultural land is slowly but surely changing the face of the island that we know and love, and that we all share.

I hope the DPA will give this problem their urgent attention before it is too late.
