Agricultural land has to be protected properly

A BIG thank you to the Guernsey Press for obtaining more information on the loss of agricultural land to domestic gardens. Shocking statistics.

I know I have been going on about this for years, but many, many people are as concerned as I am and want this flawed policy of the Island Development Plan removed and agricultural land protected properly, as soon as possible.

And now this new policy recently announced by the Development and Planning Authority to only allow change of use from agriculture to domestic garden to be considered (after 1 September) providing biodiversity enhancement information showing the benefits in the application, is being tried.

That is not going to work and the planners know it.

In a recent exchange of texts between myself and Deputy Victoria Oliver, (on 21 September following nine applications for change of use appearing in the Guernsey Press), she revealed that, ‘We are trying to address this and think we have found a way around so it is just waiting for the staff to sort out the guidance notice.’

I replied, ‘ The whole island will cheer (apart from the applicants) if you can put a stop to this. I have had an incredible amount of feedback. Other people are very angry about this situation.’

So, we shall see what the DPA come up with and only hope they can put a stop to the unacceptable loss of agricultural land.
