How will fibre be delivered?

FOLLOWING on from the letter from Mr John Buchanan and the reply from Mr Bellinger in the GP on Friday 29 October in regard to fibre broadband coming to the premises (FTTP) please could Mr Bellinger answer the following.

Published

1. My telephone line comes from a telegraph pole. Does the fibre follow the same route or does it need to be delivered underground. If underground again, who does this work and pays for it?

2. I understand that the fibre will be delivered to the premises but what happens inside the premises? For instance, does the fibre replace the copper down to my telephone socket and then to the router or does this copper need replacing as well? One would assume so. If so, who pays for this work to be done and if necessary any redecorating that may be required once it’s achieved.

Editor’s footnote: Justin Bellinger, chief executive at Sure Guernsey, responds: Thanks for the question from your reader about Guernsey Fibre and for the opportunity to respond.

If your current telephone line is delivered via an overhead cable then the fibre upgrade will follow the same route to your home. Sure will meet the cost for external work and any necessary internal work, and our team will consult with each customer beforehand on what is needed and where the new equipment is going to go.

Once the new connection has reached a customer’s property, it will be connected to an Optical Network Terminator box inside the home. In many cases this will be exactly where the current telephone socket is, so internal disruption will be minimal.

We want everyone to enjoy the faster speeds and reliable connectivity of Guernsey Fibre, so we’re going to be actively advising customers on how to get the best experience possible.

We’re excited about providing next-generation connectivity, faster internet speeds and more reliable connections through Guernsey Fibre.
