Park and ride would help ease traffic congestion

IT WOULD seem that we again go round in circles without even considering two options that deputies and those seeking to be elected (before the last island-wide election) all agreed were great ideas, and would be good to be discussed, but following elections never to be of heard again.

Park and ride, with regular shuttle buses into Town, would alleviate so much pressure on Town parking while allowing easy access for commuters and shoppers alike. Perhaps Footes Lane (again) and the Saltpans area could be utilised. Somewhere north would alleviate the extreme vehicle congestion along the east coast at rush hours.

A multi-storey car park behind Frossard House could carry a parking charge and be a joint private/States venture. Tucked into the cliff behind, the building wouldn’t have a detrimental impact on local residents or public views and would be a better use of precious land. It would also have the added benefit of increasing footfall in the Old Quarter and Mill Street which would encourage small shops and businesses to flourish and help to regenerate that area, which in turn would generate jobs and income for the States.

We have lost revenue with first registration. One way to quickly bring in some revenue would be to pursue the vehicle first importation tax.

There are now many Guernsey residents’ UK-registered cars on island which perhaps traffic wardens could check up on. There are four such cars we personally walk past almost on a daily basis parked on drives and have been doing so probably for about two to three years and we suspect there are many, many more.

Free parking in Town could also be restricted to three to four hours, enabling time to shop or have lunch, or for visitors to enjoy our town and attractions.
