Joined-up thinking needed to solve current housing crisis

JOHN CUMMINS’ recently-published letter [Obvious to all - but nothing done, 17 December] gives a hint at what a sensible solution would be to help both the current shortage of affordable housing and the blight of derelict greenhouses around the island. I’ve been going on for years now to anyone who will listen (of which there have not been many) that there must be a pragmatic solution to the problem of derelict vineries, many of which are small and in built-up areas. Allowing limited development would benefit financially both the States and landowner. Many of these parcels of land are now becoming gardens rather than reverting to agricultural land. Currently owners have no hope of their property being used for anything else, which is why the problem exists.

We need a bit of joined-up thinking and a relaxing of the current planning laws to allow this idea to develop. But I live in hope rather than expectation.
