Tunnel idea was best April Fool joke in years

WELL done Deputy Lindsay de Sausmarez. Absolutely brilliant! Best April Fool joke coming out of Guernsey I have heard in years: ‘Let’s build a tunnel under the harbour in order to pedestrianise the town seafront.’

Published

This is almost as good as the BBC’s spoof some years ago, (and Lindsay is probably not old enough to remember this), when they very seriously showed a documentary praising the benefits of a spaghetti tree, which was broadcast to the nation. People were phoning in asking where they could buy one. And here, our media ran with the tunnel idea too, asking for comment from the public. Such a good laugh. Ha, ha!

Deputy de Sausmarez might have fooled most of the island with her idea, but she did not fool me.

Presumably she has never visited any of our seafront Sundays? That stretch of road in Town is easily closed. It only requires a couple of barriers and a couple of signs, simple as that and practically no cost involved.

All vehicles are banned and that includes cyclists.

It doesn’t take a quango of people calling themselves a ‘development agency’ to come up with that idea, all at a vast expense to the taxpayer.

If this ‘development agency’ must go ahead, then let us make sure that is made up using the ‘right’ sort of people and there are no vested interests.
