Can customers choose where broadband fibre enters property?

SOME time ago I wrote asking for an explanation as to how the fibre broadband would be brought into the home. It was Mr Bellinger [Sure CEO] I believe who said that Sure would ‘work with the householder’.

When contractors were putting up the new distribution point on the telegraph poles in our road I asked a Sure person how that would work. He replied that they would bring the cables to the nearest point feasible on the property and drill through the wall and place an access point inside. It is where that access point is that is the point of my question. Is it where Sure says they will put it or do I have a choice so that I can place my router in the most convenient and efficient position for wi-fi access in the house?

Secondly, in a recent Sure survey one of the questions was ‘would you be prepared to pay more for fibre broadband’ or words to that effect. As it seems no one will be able to choose whether they have fibre or not surely this question is moot. As Sure have been found to have been overcharging business customers by the regulator (whatever spin they wish to put on it) will the regulator ensure that the ordinary customer will not be charged more for fibre broadband?

Editor’s footnote: Justin Bellinger, chief executive of Sure in Guernsey, said: Thank you for the opportunity to respond to this letter. Once a customer’s property is fibre-ready the internet service providers will be in touch to inform the customer. As part of Sure’s process we arrange a pre-installation visit with the customer to discuss the specifics of how the fibre connection will reach and enter their home. It will most likely follow the same route as their existing connection and therefore be completely free to install.

At Sure, our fibre packages start from £43 per month. Our Superfast 100Mbps Fibre Broadband, which costs £58 per month, is £10 cheaper per month than the nearest copper broadband product, which delivers an average of only 87Mbps. For the first six months customers who choose to move to fibre will also benefit from a further discount if they choose Essential 50 Mbps or faster fibre broadband.
