What have the youth of today got to do?

HAVING read Mr Hamon’s letter [What this island needs is a government that cares, Thursday 16 June] I can’t help but agree with him.

Guernsey, our beautiful island, is going downhill. I am not surprised that youngsters are vandalising. I don’t agree with it but I’m afraid they’re bored. They have nothing to do. It’s alright if you’re sports minded, but not everybody likes sport.

We had three cinemas, St George’s Hall for roller skating or dancing, several good youth clubs, also other dance halls. There were cabarets at most hotels in the summer.

Now what is there? No decent cinemas, getting to The Mallard if you haven’t got transport is really hard, no youth clubs, or not any that I know of, all the clubs have gone except one, I think.

So please tell me what have the youth of today got to do? Even the older couples go to the pub or go for a meal, both of which are expensive, and with everything getting more expensive, people are struggling.

No wonder they are leaving the island in their droves.

Something needs to be done before our island disappears.

What have we got to leave for our children and grandchildren in the future?
