Desire to build on greenfield sites becoming an obsession

HERE we go again...

Published

Over the past few weeks there have been numerous letters and articles in the Guernsey Press objecting to the building of essential worker accommodation in the field situated between the PEH and the Duchess of Kent House. Recently there was a further application by a developer to build on a greenfield in the Oberlands.

Nobody is arguing that there is a lack of suitable accommodation for nurses, doctors and those involved in the medical profession, but why build on a greenfield site that provides a ‘green vein’ through that part of the island?

There are so many other options that should be considered for such accommodation. Next door to this field is the Duchess of Kent House and adjoining that is the States Dairy, which would provide a perfect site to build staff accommodation.

An alternative site has at last been found to build a new dairy at The Brickfield in St Andrew’s. This project is in urgent need of pushing ahead with current facilities not fit for purpose. Local farmers are responsible for maintaining a pleasant and sustainable environment for the benefit of the island, whilst protecting the future of the iconic Guernsey breed.

There are many brownfield sites available for development in close proximity to the PEH, including derelict former tourist accommodation. These establishments contribute nothing to the beauty of the island, but in fact create an eyesore and a poor impression for tourists, unlike our green fields.

The relentless desire to build on greenfield sites is becoming an obsession for States committees and private developers and should be halted until all other options are explored.

I sincerely hope that Deputy Steve Falla’s requete is successful and common sense prevails.
