New luggage scanner is still leading to delays for passengers
I REFER to your article in the Thursday 25 August edition about the new baggage scanner [New hand luggage scanners should ease airport
delays].
One particular line had more significance than some might expect – “although some items may have to undergo additional screening”.
When I travelled through the airport last Saturday the initial pleasure of returning to the luxury of a late 20th century-style security experience, where nothing had to be removed from bags, was quickly dashed when it became apparent that nearly every passenger ahead of me was waiting for a bag to be hand-searched.
It transpired that any bag that had a laptop or tablet in it was being taken aside for a hand-search.
Needless to say, this affected almost every passenger with the result that the whole process was slower than previously when liquids and screens had to be removed from bags.
I can only hope that this requirement will be quickly eliminated, as otherwise it appears that the new scanner has been a colossal waste of money – if every bag needs to be hand-searched anyway they would have been better spending a small amount of money on a few desks and employing more staff to just manually search the bags in the first place.
