Please don’t let us down

READING Monday’s Press, I could be forgiven for thinking I had stepped back in time. Married women filing their own tax returns? Whatever next – attending boxing matches?

Guernsey is a lovely place. I believe in the goodness of fellow residents and trust that this anti-discrimination legislation will pass this week, but have been deeply saddened by what I have read of late.

To be clear, if you want to continue to hold and express views that are unkind and offensive, this legislation won’t stop you. It will, however, make sure that you can’t hurt or discriminate against anyone else as a result, and that’s of critical importance.

Importantly it also means others can’t discriminate against you for having such views, so it works both ways.

This isn’t about cost, everything costs money and most changes will cost very little; it’s about being decent human beings. You never know when you or your loved ones will need protection in the future.

In fact it will financially benefit the island in the long run by attracting talent and improving our reputation overseas.

Please don’t let us down, Guernsey. The island’s future depends on it.
