Assemblies have done little to shout about

LISTENING to the lip service in the States pow wow on the radio, it is easy to see why we are in such a mess. They talk about not wanting to lose local people from the island because they cannot afford to live here. Wake up guys.

We have had people leaving the island in numbers for an age now and you have been told it was/is happening but you do not listen until it suits you. The cost of living in Guernsey is so high that people on pensions and low income/minimum wage are in real trouble trying to make ends meet.

To help us with this we get the government wanting to charge us more to dump our rubbish because we have been so successful with their recycling scheme. That’s the way to make friends and show the public you are on our side. If the States are not making enough because we have done our bit and there is a need to get some back, why not drop your wages in government to fill the gap? In the House we have heard repeatedly how States members think their work is good governance. I thought governance was the/a system by which an organisation is controlled and operates, and the mechanisms by which it, and its people are held accountable. At the end of the day the people are only asking for the promises made by individuals to get themselves elected to be fulfilled. After all you promise such great leadership on the doorstep – but do you actually know you are reneging on your promises or in fact do you even care?

As far as I can recall, leadership sets out the direction and makes sure that it happens and governance is the accountability for that. In all honesty we have not had a government that has ever been held accountable and the leadership shown by past and present governments is and has not been something to shout home about. It is not, as some politicians seem to feel, a favourite pastime of the people to knock the government. We are actually calling for help. We want Guernsey back. We only want to be able to live in peace and not have to worry whether it’s going to be eat or heat this winter, which is shaping up to be an even greater nightmare than ever before.
