Erect statue of late Queen and rename square after her

I WOULD like to support an excellent suggestion put forward by M Le Vasseur in his letter to the Press on 13 October.

Published

He proposes a statue of our late Queen Elizabeth II of happy memory to be erected in Market Square, the square to be then renamed Queen Elizabeth Square. To give plenty of time for this project to be completed he suggests the important date 9 May 2025, 80 years after the Liberation. The Arts Council should be asked to recommend a suitable sculptor for such a momentous project.

A member of the royal family could be invited to visit us at that time and asked to unveil the statue and also meet the person whose brainchild it was.

I feel sure that it would be among the first to be erected in the UK. It would gain national interest and confirm Guernsey’s long attachment to and affection for the monarchy.

The public could be invited to donate half of the cost with the States meeting the remainder and any additional expenses incurred.
