Nothing more important than maintaining Alderney airport

WE READ in the Guernsey Press of 1 November, of a splendid plan to reconfigure the harbour to allow many more private and commercial vessels to be accommodated there.

No doubt they would increase the much needed income and be a very successful venture but at a very considerable cost. £90m. is suggested but these estimates tend to rise somewhat when one gets down to the nitty-gritty. Think of Jersey Hospital or HS2.

However there are more pressing matters to deal with and none more urgent than Alderney airport. This has been discussed for years and now the runway is unsafe. Alderney just cannot afford to be without safe and regular air connections and it is Guernsey’s responsibility to help provide an airport fit for purpose.

It doesn’t need to be able to take Boeing 747s. A wider runway to safely land 20 or 30 seaters coming from Guernsey, Southampton, Jersey or France will provide all the connections they need for years to come.

So for goodness sake let’s get on with it and while you are about it build a proper terminal.
