Individuals with outdated thinking could undermine airport’s development

IT IS EVIDENT that Alderney needs a modern airport to improve connectivity and have flexible functionality for the future. As Deputy Roffey has pointed out, the issue is about the capability of the airport, not what types of aircraft may use it. However, we see individuals with outdated thinking or connections to vested interests seeking to undermine an initiative which would future-proof the facilities while increasing the opportunities for Alderney and the Bailiwick to benefit from its development.

Air Alderney suggests that it is the answer, and its name might lead one to believe it has a mandate and support from the island, when there is no apparent connection at all. If they have such potential then the length of runway would seem to be immaterial and by offering alternative routes they should be able to complement Aurigny operations. However, their focus appears to be to undermine the case for a longer runway option, thereby giving them a commercial advantage.

How would their proposed mixed fleet of old and modern aircraft have the capacity to manage the current annual 50,000 passengers to and from Alderney, let alone any increased capacity for the future, and what is their resilience to survive and deliver a service through a Covid-type scenario?
