Bring in pound-a-day parking instead of GST

INTRODUCING GST, with inflation at its current high rate, is a strange thing for deputies to attempt. Those in favour may well find themselves struggling at the next election. Or perhaps they are not intending to stand.

One fact that has emerged, is that island-wide voting is simply not fit for purpose.

You know, that’s where the gullible public visit Beau Sejour for speed-dating with wannabe deputies. The wannabe deputies are affable and smiling and mostly agree with the voters ideas, such as being against GST. So the voter thinks they are wise, a safe pair of hands, and good to vote for. As I said, gullible.

We need to return to the parish hustings. So we can judge the ability of wannabe deputies in the cut and thrust of debate.

If not GST then what? I would suggest pound-a-day parking. Every vehicle pays £30 a month by direct debit. This is to park on any road where it is legal to do so, in beach car parks and in disc-controlled zones. Easy to set up and administer, and a fair and equitable system. Guernsey has over 85,000 vehicles, more than 60,000 of those are private cars.

This system is so much better than Jersey’s idiotic, outdated and divisive scratch cards. But then Guernsey is always better than Jersey, eh?
