Rally damages Guernsey’s green credentials and must never happen again

IT SEEMS that many people believe that it’s perfectly acceptable that after over 100 objections the Guernsey Motor Rally gained permission to go ahead. We do not live on the route, but nevertheless our Saturday afternoon’s peace has been destroyed by the noise of cars racing through narrow country lanes. It took longer to get home this morning because of a traffic jam caused by a rally car tearing through a lane, crashing and damaging a granite wall. Furthermore, those on the route were confined to their homes for long periods of the day. Sensible people accepted this curtailing of freedom during the pandemic because it was for the common good. The restriction on private householders during this rally simply benefits a small number who wish to engage in their niche hobby, a hobby that impacts on the lives of all and damages Guernsey’s green credentials. This rally must never happen again.
