Review the employment benefits of all civil servants
READING the Guernsey Press front page on Saturday, reference the headlines of the States paying out £1m. for staff redundancy for only 10 of them really makes you wonder why P&R is pushing for GST.
Again, we see that it is about time that P&R really gets to grip with putting its house in order.
They state there will be a shortfall in our finances, but do we truly believe their figures? We still have a situation of our tax department being over two years behind on the assessments, so how much is there still to be claimed? Yet P&R claims that we have a deficit.
Deputy John Dyke was shocked at the figures of payment in redundancy money but, why only one deputy, where are all the others questioning what is happening?
The disgraceful payment to one civil servant of £287,000 in redundancy is shameful, when there are people struggling to afford to keep their heating on.
There are times when staff are removed from their positions and then re-employed at a more costly salary.
Peter Ferbrache needs to comment on the situation at the moment and what P&R needs to do for the future.
Over the weekend, many islanders have discussed what is happening and there is real anger of this waste of taxpayers’ money.
P&R and the States need to provide the taxpayer with how much the deputies are being paid and ancillaries’ costings.
In times past, deputies were businessmen who worked for the States for practically nothing and in those days managed to control our finances correctly.
It is time now to remove payments to deputies and review the employment benefits of all civil servants. This will go a long way to save money. The majority of civil servants do a great job and deserve a good salary, but our States is well above the private sector. Times have changed and we need a strong P&R to make serious changes and not to rely on taxing the public who are really struggling to live at the moment. Paying out millions to those who don’t need it is not on.
GST will not solve the problems and it shows with the amount of Guernsey public against it. P&R, just sort your own States public employment purse – that will be a start to save money.
