Election candidates with business skills can make the big calls

THE recent article by Rick Wharton (GP 2nd May) made very interesting reading. Essentially it sets out what needs to change in the way our island is governed so that we can be assured of a prosperous future. The problem is that with a very few exceptions we have a cohort of States deputies that are manifestly unqualified for the positions they find themselves in. I believe it has already been said by others that were the current States a PLC, it would be bankrupt and in liquidation in no time.

That is not to criticise members of the Assembly, who I’m sure are mostly intelligent, well-meaning people. It’s just that they lack the experience and expertise required to make some of the decisions asked of them.

Things have to change, and hopefully in the direction that Mr Wharton envisages. I would like to see the next election focused on candidates with proven business skills and experience. Quite how we do that is for others to decide, if indeed there is a collective will to effect change.
