We need action now if we are to retain our young professionals

HOUSING cannot await for another review. It needs action now if we are to retain in Guernsey our young, professionals and key workers, plus recruit new ones. The species-rich habitat that we need to recreate is homes if Guernsey is to have a future once our ageing population dies. The two objectives are not mutually exclusive as families want to bring up their families near commons or woods so both habitats can co-exist. Retain high grade agricultural land for Guernsey cows to graze and address the decades of unsightly decaying greenhouses. Some may look green if cleared but the sites are invariably of poor quality as chemicals, used for years, have been left in them and need expensively clearing along with the removal of the greenhouse debris.

Congestion in and between the main centres could be alleviated with environmentally-sensitive developments on old greenhouse sites and row back on ribbon development.

I’m sure your orchards are lovely, but how many of Guernsey’s inhabitants enjoy them? Adjoining a few new homes, with a scheme that the residents take care of the area and sell surplus fruit from the orchards for us all to enjoy could be a real legacy of societe Guernesiaise.
