What will become of the Visitor Information Centre?
ON 31 July your newspaper reported that the States of Guernsey and the charity behind the proposed Victor Hugo Centre had signed ‘a letter of exclusivity’ regarding the use of the former States offices on the North Esplanade.
This iconic building, so prominent on our Town seafront, currently houses the Visitor Information Centre. It is the perfect venue for tourists, cruise liner passengers and locals seeking information about our island.
It is easily accessible for everyone, has well kept, clean toilets and is a good showcase for all that is good about Guernsey.
And yet, there is no indication as to what will become of the Visitor Information Centre, or where it will be housed in the future, once this charity takes over the building.
It will be replaced by ‘a performance, exhibition and event space’.
Our States seems to be getting in the habit of handing over publicly owned buildings to private developers, sometimes almost free of charge.
I just hope our vibrant and attractive Visitor Information Centre doesn’t end up being crammed into a wooden hut down on one of the piers.
