Cost of hiring car deterring visitors

I LOVE Guernsey, having visited the island countless times over the past 50 years, enjoying a timeshare for 25 of those, and now bringing my own child to enjoy the beaches I enjoyed as a child. I am an avid reader of the Guernsey Press.

I read your article about cheaper travel and thought I would share with you that I feel that the cost of hiring a car in Guernsey is also deterring visitors.

The cost of hiring a car for two weeks is in excess of £1,000 so, for the first year in probably 30 years, we travelled on the Condor ferry in July which was hideous. It was the 4.30am ferry that came in the high winds to take home the Island Games people.

My dad has travelled on it many times and it has always been ‘plain sailing’. My young son and even myself were very ill on the boat, along with many others. I am not sure that it would normally have sailed in that weather but Condor was keen to get a boat to Guernsey to get the many visitors to the games back to the mainland, So perhaps it was a freak occasion.

Also, driving my Discovery Sport around Guernsey was not fun and meant that we stuck to the main roads and didn’t dare meander through the ruettes tranquilles which we have always enjoyed doing.

We have visited for so many years, have many friends on the island, but for the first time in 50 years are wondering whether to return next year. It isn’t a matter of affordability but one of principle.

I guess that supply and demand has pushed prices up as we hear that there are no longer as many cars available to hire on the island.

I hope the feedback is useful.
