‘Jersey has a zoo, Guernsey could have an Eden’
Balancing the gains of tourism with Guernsey’s unique and fragile biodiversity is quite a challenge. What attractions could Guernsey offer for visitors which would tempt them away from the Mediterranean or wherever? Children in the rain is certainly a challenge.
Visitors and islanders have a relatively limited range of places and activities in which to pass their time as many of these are outdoors – our weather is somewhat variable – and the size of those with shelter are not able to be enjoyed by, or sustainably protected from, large numbers of tourists (the attraction of whom seems to be the aim). Erosion of cliff paths and other beauty spots is an important consideration as well as the physical limitations of the very young and the more elderly.
An accessible, covered, eco/nature venue able to be visited in every season might be a solution? Building on (literally) Guernsey’s horticultural/glasshouse heritage, perhaps our version of Kew Gardens? As an example, The Eden Project was constructed within old quarries and variations of Eden Projects have been, and are being, constructed in the UK and globally. Using on-island expertise, imaginative landscaping at Les Vardes, perhaps using some of that ‘inert waste,’ might provide one site. Other disused infrastructure could be re-purposed to provide additional and diverse attractions highlighting the therapeutic benefits of nature with a range of activities for everyone.
To be successful, any important project needs to be believed in and supported by local folk, especially here as Guerns are rightly proud and protective of their magical island. Involve the National Trust of Guernsey, La Societe, Grow, Floral Guernsey, Guernsey Nature Commission, Chamber of Commerce and Guernsey Hospitality Group to name but a few. Investing in such a project would provide skills, training and employment for the community with long-term economic benefits. Raise money by creating a ‘community company’ offering shares in a Guernsey eco project and/or membership fees specifically for locals so as to be stakeholders? Other funds from crowd funding, private investors and sponsors?
Jersey has a Zoo. Guernsey could have an Eden.
