The ‘blue’ economy should be expanded, not vilified

I WOULD like to respond to recent sad letters in the Press to say that boat owners have always paid their way in mooring fees and have not been a drain on the taxpayer or those receiving benefits.

It is only recently, since harbours and airports accounts have been amalgamated, I believe, that they are now expected to subsidise the airport.

The harbours and airports are of benefit to everyone, whether they realise it or not, through freight, fuel, post, tourists, medical, families and business visitors etc.

The boatbuilding businesses (sadly diminished), chandlers, marine engineers and other support trades employ many in Guernsey, who in turn pay taxes.

Thank goodness we have deputies who can give a balanced view.

The ‘blue’ economy should be expanded, not vilified, and could be if the community focused on a brighter vision of the future.
