Upset to see green, open land developed

CYCLING along Fort Road now brings a heaviness to my heart as I notice the loss of yet more green and open space (agricultural or not, it was still green and open space), and yet more development and parcelling of land for the enjoyment of only a few islanders.

Cycling through Rue de Bergers at the back of the La Grande Mare golf course is very similar, yet more heavy heart, as I notice yet more land being turned over for the pleasure and enjoyment of a small few. I wonder when the rest of us might get the chance to enjoy and benefit from the pleasure of green and open space, where nature can grow wild and where biodiversity can thrive. I long for the day when we are not putting our own self-orientated needs ahead of the wider community – and developers stop supporting this for the sake of development. It is arrogant for us humans to believe that we can live without nature, that we can just keep developing and not give any thought to how this might impact the wellbeing of the island as a whole, not just now, but for future generations ahead.

I wonder how long it will be before other precious areas are targeted, more green and open space lost to (over) development. I really hope that we can become a little more conscious on this island about what we are doing – we may only be a small island, but what we do affects everyone, and at some point we have to realise that we cannot keep developing, that we have to find another way to live and be here together on planet earth, which is more respectful of nature’s needs and our need of nature to survive and, indeed, thrive.
