If the States wants our tax returns in on time, then make them available earlier

I WHOLEHEARTEDLY agree with A Blondel’s letter of 24 April – ‘Why did our States not give us the option to file tax returns jointly?’ Completing two returns takes up so much more of my time and that of the tax office to process them. At the beginning of March, after spending some hours on it, I managed to complete mine. I haven’t sent it yet as I want to complete my husband’s first, then send them together. Had I been able to make a joint return it would have been submitted by now, as I have all of his figures ready, (because I have to divide most income by two, as it is all joint) but I need to find the time to complete it.

Also, not being able to access the online version until March is too late. I have my figures ready in January and have more time to spend sitting at my computer during January and February. If the States want our returns in on time to process them, they need to be made available earlier and allow married couples to complete just the one return. If Jersey can do it, why can’t we?
