Deputy was a lone disapproving voice on bus diversions

I refer to a report in the Guernsey Press on 13 April titled ‘Deputy “incensed”by bus diversions out west’.

Published

The deputy said that he thought CT Plus was ‘shirking its responsibility to collect and drop passengers at least somewhere near their normal bus stops’.

This, I think, we can all agree having seen the cancelled signs going up at bus stops around the island. Although we cannot entirely blame the bus company as there does appear to be an increased amount of roadworks going on this year. But there should be some sort of contingency planning to pick passengers up from near those stops.

Strangely for a bus company, the transport of passengers doesn’t always appear to be a priority.

However, there is another story here that was briefly passed over. The fact that only one deputy was incensed. I feel pretty sure that before island-wide voting there would have been many more western parishes deputies also ‘incensed’ and vocal in support of their constituents. Now that deputies have one island-wide constituency their support for smaller groups seems to have dropped off. They purportedly now represent everyone – the reality is that they may choose to represent no-one.

Surely, this illustrates the failure of island-wide voting.
