Appalling that such a wealthy island is so hard to access

I WAS born in Guernsey and regularly return to visit my parents and friends. I find it fascinating and appalling that such a wonderful and wealthy island is so hard to access. Flights for five of us were £800. You might expect five-star treatment at this price.

Sadly we came to and from the island in an ancient, battered looking propeller plane that resembled a vintage model from the Eastern bloc. The engines were so loud you could hardly hear and the air con was pretty useless. The staff on-board were lovely.

On our return to the UK we were faced with a new check-in system at the airport. My husband and I found it really confusing to do ourselves and had to ask for help several times. So, goodness knows how an older person may cope with it. We eventually made it through security and were once again met by the battered prop plane with the useless air con.

The staff were lovely and very efficient.

I am not sure how it has come to this. One main airline to the island which is poorly managed simply isn’t working. Surely the States of Guernsey must accept this.

I adore my home island but feel worried at how inaccessible it’s becoming. And I cannot remember a time in 48 years where travel to and from it has been so stressful and unpleasant.
