Could a smaller Assembly attract more candidates from the business world?
I HAVE favoured a reduction in deputies for a long time. The current system doesn’t work and is failing the very people it should help, the voters.
Deputy Helyar has gone out on Facebook with a survey of either reduce deputies by 10 before the election next June or leave it at 38.
This is something I thought the media would have done a while ago, knowing the feeling about how little is getting achieved due to the skullduggery of some members holding things back and not getting the top 10 major issues sorted and we need Guernsey to work.
Thirty-eight around a boardroom – basically it doesn’t work, so I challenge the media to conduct the two-question survey. Let’s see what the public favours because at the moment there is a lack of interest in the next election and this might be something that shows that a smaller Assembly will attract more candidates, especially from the business world that at present wouldn’t stand.
Well done, Mark Helyar.
