Convert empty States buildings into hostels

LET’S hope the action taken by the team of charities – well done – to house those in need has started the ball rolling for them to carry on. The States needs to supply them with funds to convert their empty States buildings scattered around the island into hostels – shame on them if they do not. As for GHA being funded to build social housing they appear to be too busy being landlords and maintaining their new builds. If the plots allocated to GHA are the property of the taxpayer, take them back. Deputy Peter Roffey is right in suggesting that the States of Guernsey is the main contractor for social housing. Force Guernsey electricians, plumbers, carpenters and apprentices to build at cost – there should be a saving of up to 30%.
