DESTINED to become the island's best ever women's golfer, Aimee Ponte has made history as Guernsey's first golfer-of-the-year.

The youngest ever Guernsey and Channel Islands champion received the award at this week's Guernsey Golf Union annual meeting to cap an amazing year for the 15-year-old.

Ponte, who has been confirmed as a definite starter for the 2013 Island Games golf competition in Bermuda, beat off challenges from fellow nominees Bobby Eggo, James Hamon and Kimberley Goodall to win the new award which comes in the fashion of a silver salver donated by Jock Tanguy, the current GGU president, and his wife Marion.

All four nominees became CI champions in 2011 but Ponte's overall achievements outstripped that of her challengers, said Tanguy.
