THE eventual champion ended Alice Loveridge's fine run at the Portuguese Open at the weekend.

In the junior girls' singles event, Guernsey's Olympic hopeful was seeded eight and found herself in a group of four.

She won her first game against a local girl but in her next game, a rematch with Eva Jurkova, whom she had already beaten in the team event, the Slovakian gained a surprise revenge win over the Guernsey girl in a late night encounter.

This put the pressure on Loveridge to beat a Luxembourg opponent to ensure progress to the main knockout stage, but the Sarnian came up trumps, winning in three games.
