LAUREN HURFORD was crowned island women's tenpin bowling champion for a fourth time after the finals took place at the Island Bowl.

In the round robin competition, Hurford, pictured, took an early lead which she did not relinquish, finishing with an excellent average of 194, ahead of Michelle Ward with 178 and Janette de Garis with 175, the other qualifiers being Linda Robilliard and Karen Winter.

The win came as a surprise to Hurford, who had taken a break from the sport building up to the event.

'I had not bowled for about three months beforehand, so it was quite an achievement for me to win it,' she said.
