HOPES that Guernsey's Ali Merrien and Nottingham's Simon Skelton might retain the Fred Olsen Cruise Lines world indoor mixed pairs title were dashed at Potters Leisure Resort in Hopton-on-Sea in Norfolk yesterday.

The proud defending champions endured a frustrating game against England's Debbie Stavrou and Scottish legend David Gourlay, and were beaten to the punch, 7-7, 7-2.

'Nothing seemed to go right for us,' said Skelton.

'It wasn't as if luck played a big part in the game, but whereas David always seemed to be getting the right touches, my best bowls often went unrewarded.'
