THE gauntlet having been laid down by Colombians earlier in the day, Independents overcame a stern test of their credentials to remain within one point of their big hockey title rivals on Saturday.

With a large contingent from the league leaders watching from the balcony having already put Yobbos to the sword 7-0 and now hoping to see the team in orange drop some points, Indies had to withstand a second-half barrage from Casuals before two late goals gave the scoreline a flattering look.

But goals are the one statistic that matters and in front of goal Indies were far more clinical than their opposition.

That was certainly the case in the opening quarter-of-an-hour as the title chasers scored from both of their two noteworthy attacks, which came within the space of 90 seconds of each other.
