Watson crashes

HEATHER WATSON has continued her indifferent start to 2012 after crashing out in Memphis in the first round.

The 19-year-old Sarnian was comfortably beaten by Sofia Arvidsson from Sweden 6-2, 6-3 having entered straight into the main draw.

It capped a poor day for Watson, whose world ranking dropped to 123 in the latest list and sees her now down to British number four, falling below fellow teenager Laura Robson.

Having reached the quarter-finals of this same event last year, Watson will lose further points and her ranking will likely drop again next week.
