A FIERCE Guernsey comeback was thwarted in agonising fashion as Jersey won the men's inter-insular hockey tie with a last-gasp strike in a nine-goal thriller.

Simon Watling's powerful strike from a short corner looked to have been saved by Guernsey keeper Rob Turville, but it bounced up and then down over the line for a dramatic Caesarean victory.

It decided a see-saw game that had seen the hosts Jersey take an early lead, before Guernsey turned it around to lead 2-1, only for a three-goal Reds surge see the visitors trail 4-2.

Despite levelling it before Watling's intervention, Guernsey captain Matt Watson, who scored twice, admitted it was the start of the second half that cost his side dear.
